How to Spot FAKE Nagamani Cobra Pearls

How to Identify Real Cobra Pearls – Avoid Getting Scammed with Fakes

The stones shown in the image above are typical examples of synthetic or dyed agate commonly misrepresented by some sellers as genuine Naga Mani (Cobra Pearls)

How to Tell the Difference

Before identifying real vs. fake Nagamani, it's important to understand what is considered to be genuine Nagamani.

A common myth is that Nagamani forms from cobra venom - this is false. While there's no scientific proof of its formation or existence, authentic Nagamani (classified as Mustika Pearls) are believed to be mineral concretions or gallstones that develop naturally inside a cobra’s body, similar to cysts or kidney stones. These can form in various parts of the body, including the head.

Why are some sellers advertising these cheap synthetic agate stones as Naga Mani?

Authentic Nagamani, or Cobra Mustika Stones, are extremely rare and primarily found in parts of Southeast Asia, particularly in regions like Borneo, Kalimantan, and Java. These areas are home to indigenous tribes (often referred to as Orang Asli), who have long valued Mustika Stones and sacred woods for their spiritual significance. However, due to language barriers and limited access to the internet, these communities rarely engage in global trade, making it nearly impossible for most Western or European collectors to source genuine stones directly.

As a result, many sellers turn to synthetic or imitation stones, often priced under $10, and falsely market them as real Nagamani to meet demand and attract buyers.
